1. Born on August 27th, 1770 in Stuttgart, Germany, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was a prominent German philosopher who significantly influenced Western philosophy and the development of Marxism.
- Hegel’s philosophical ideas are based on an idealist perspective, viewing reality as a process of continuous change and progress, known as “dialectic”. This process is propelled by the conflict between thesis and antithesis leading to a synthesis which then becomes a new thesis.
Hegel was deeply influenced by the Enlightenment ideals of reason, progress, and human emancipation. He sought to reconcile the rational and the empirical in his philosophy, believing that reason could reveal the inner logic of the world.
Perhaps his most significant work is “The Phenomenology of Spirit” (1807), where he outlined a method of philosophical analysis called ‘phenomenology’ or ‘the science of experience’, which studies how people form concepts and how these concepts evolve over time.
Hegel was the first professor appointed to the new University of Berlin after its founding in 1810, making him a prominent figure in early German universities.
Despite his strong belief in progress, Hegel was deeply conservative, and he believed that society’s institutions and laws were divinely ordained and reflected the rational will of the people.
His influence extended beyond philosophy to other disciplines. For instance, his dialectical thinking influenced Marxism and his ideas on the state influenced 19th-century political science.
He was also a prolific writer, with over 30 published volumes and numerous lectures that were later transcribed into books.
Hegel’s philosophy is often misunderstood or oversimplified. His works are complex and multifaceted, requiring careful interpretation to fully grasp their depth and complexity.
