1. Ramesses II, also known as Ozymandias or Ramses the Great, was an Egyptian pharaoh who ruled from approximately 1279 BCE to 1213 BCE and is considered one of the most successful and powerful rulers in ancient history.
2. He is widely known for his military conquests and expansion of the Egyptian Empire. Ramesses II conquered many nations, including Canaan, Syria, and Palestine. His reign saw Egypt’s greatest territorial expansion since the Old Kingdom.
3. The pharaoh was also a great builder who commissioned numerous monuments to his glory. Among these are the Ramesseum, the temple of Abu Simbel, and the temples at Abydos, Karnak, and Luxor. He is credited with building more than 100 pyramids and hundreds of other buildings during his reign.
4. Ramesses II was a great patron of literature, arts, and culture. During his time, Egyptian literature flourished, with works such as the “Iliad” and “Odyssey” attributed to him. He also established schools for the training of scribes and priests.
